How many days until Christmas? Christmas Day 2026 is Friday, 25 December, so from Wednesday, 21 October 2026 there are 65 days until Christmas, which is 9 weeks and 2 days. The table below gives the count from other dates you might be planning around, and the rest of this guide shows how to count the days yourself, so you can check any countdown you see online.

To count from any other date in October, subtract one from 65 for each day after 21 October. For example, 25 October is 4 days later, so it is 61 days until Christmas.

How to count the days until Christmas by hand

You only need the number of days in each month and one rule: count whole days from the start date to the target date, without counting the start date.

1. Finish the current month. October has 31 days. From 21 October, there are 31 − 21 = 10 days left in October.
2. Add every full month in between. November has 30 days.
3. Add the days in December up to the 25th. That is 25.
4. Add them up. 10 + 30 + 25 = 65 days.

The same steps work from any date. From 11 November: 30 − 11 = 19 days left in November, plus 25 in December, makes 44. When the start date is already in December, simply subtract: from 18 December it is 25 − 18 = 7 days. What day of the week is Christmas?

Because 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day, Christmas moves forward one weekday each year, and two after a 29 February.

Notice the jump from Saturday in 2027 to Monday in 2028. That skip happens because 2028 is a leap year, so the extra day pushes the holiday two weekdays forward.

A Friday Christmas, as in 2026, gives many people a three-day weekend from Friday to Sunday. When Christmas falls on a Saturday, as in 2027, US federal employees usually get the day off on the Friday before, under the standard rule for holidays that land on a weekend.

Counting days: inclusive or exclusive?

Most countdowns, including the numbers on this page, use exclusive counting. They do not count today, because today is already under way. If you want to count both today and Christmas Day itself, add one. From 21 October, that gives 66 calendar dates you could cross off.

Neither method is wrong, but mixing them causes off-by-one errors:

• “Sleeps until Christmas” uses the exclusive number. The last sleep is Christmas Eve, so from 21 October there are 65 sleeps.
• A countdown calendar with a box for Christmas Day needs the inclusive number, 66.
• An Advent calendar is different again. Most have 24 doors, one for each day from 1 to 24 December.

Weeks, weekdays and weekends until Christmas

Days are not the only useful unit.

• Weeks: 65 days ÷ 7 = 9 weeks and 2 days.
• Weekdays: from Wednesday 21 October to Friday 18 December, counting both, there are 43 weekdays (Monday to Friday). If your school or office closes from 21 December, that is roughly how many working days remain. Subtract any closures, such as Thanksgiving and the day after.
• Weekends: there are nine full Saturday-Sunday weekends between now and Christmas, from 24-25 October to 19-20 December.

Teachers can use the weekday count to plan a unit that ends before the winter break. Families can give each of the nine weekends one job, from writing a gift list to wrapping.

Hours and minutes until Christmas

For a bigger number on a countdown poster, convert the days:

• 65 days is 1,560 hours (65 × 24).
• 1,560 hours is 93,600 minutes (1,560 × 60).

Those figures count from midnight at the start of 22 October to midnight at the start of 25 December, plus one more day for the rest of 21 October. A live countdown will show slightly different numbers depending on the time you check it, so round to whole days for anything printed.

When does Advent start in 2026?

Many families count down with Advent rather than with a plain number. In Western churches, Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. With Christmas on a Friday in 2026, the Sundays before it are 20, 13 and 6 December and 29 November, so Advent 2026 begins on Sunday, 29 November, 26 days before Christmas.

That is why Advent is not always the same length. It can be as short as 22 days or as long as 28, depending on the weekday of Christmas. Advent calendars avoid the problem by always starting on 1 December.

Planning backwards from Christmas

A countdown is most useful when you work backwards from the date. A simple plan from 65 days out:

Shipping deadlines change every year and differ by carrier and service, so check the official holiday dates from your carrier once they are published rather than relying on last year’s list.

Countdown ideas for families and classrooms

A visible countdown turns the wait into a short daily routine.

• Paper chain. Make one link for each day left. From 21 October you need 65 links; from 1 December, 24.
• Kindness countdown. Write one small kind act on each link and do it when you tear it off.
• Number of the day. Write the days left on the board each morning and ask students to show it as weeks and days.
• Book countdown. Wrap a book from your shelf for each of the last 24 days and read one each night.
• Calendar colouring. Print a December calendar and colour each day as it passes. It doubles as practice with reading dates.

Why Christmas is on 25 December in the US

In the United States, Christmas Day is one of the federal holidays set in law, and it has been a federal holiday since 1870. It is fixed to 25 December, so the only thing that changes from year to year is the weekday. Days until Christmas 2027 and beyond

Once the presents are open, the count resets. From Christmas Day 2026 to Christmas Day 2027 is exactly 365 days, because 2027 is not a leap year. From New Year’s Day 2027 it is 358 days, and from 25 July 2027, the “Christmas in July” date some families celebrate, it is 153 days.

Over a leap year the gap grows to 366 days. From 25 December 2027 to 25 December 2028 is 366 days, because 29 February 2028 falls in between. A quick check: if the span includes a 29 February, add one day to 365.

Common mistakes in Christmas countdowns

• Counting today. This adds one day. Decide on exclusive or inclusive counting first.
• Assuming every month has 30 days. October has 31, November 30 and December 31.
• Counting to Christmas Eve by mistake. From 21 October, Christmas Eve is 64 days away, one day fewer.
• Forgetting the new year. From 21 October 2026, New Year’s Day 2027 is 72 days away, seven days after Christmas.
