BRIGANCE Age Calculator

Calculate chronological age formatted for BRIGANCE Early Childhood Screens. The BRIGANCE scoring system requires precise age calculation for accurate developmental screening. Our free calculator applies BRIGANCE-specific borrowing rules and age formatting.

Use the Test Age Calculator with BRIGANCE mode

For BRIGANCE-formatted results (exact age, no nearest-month rounding), use the test age calculator and select BRIGANCE. Exact-age convention: methodology.

About BRIGANCE Age Calculation

Need exact calendar Y;M;D before BRIGANCE formatting? Use the chronological age calculator. The BRIGANCE scoring system is a criterion-referenced assessment tool widely used in early childhood education and intervention. Accurate chronological age is essential because BRIGANCE compares a child's performance against age-specific developmental milestones.

BRIGANCE Early Childhood Screen III

The most commonly used BRIGANCE tool is the Early Childhood Screen III, designed for children from birth through age seven. Screeners must calculate exact chronological age to determine which skill domains to assess and which criterion levels apply.

Exact calendar age, then the screen

BRIGANCE early childhood screens use chronological age to decide which skill domains and criterion levels apply. Examiner materials emphasize the exact calendar span — years, months, and days — rather than the nearest-month rounding used on many Wechsler record forms. ChronoCalc’s BRIGANCE mode follows that exact-age convention. It does not round 16 days into the next month. If you need that Wechsler step for a different test given the same day, run it separately and label both lines.

The age on the screen is the age on the administration date. An age computed on the report-writing date can move a child across a criterion band if the session was near a birthday. Enter the test date, not today, unless you screened today. The borrowing method is the ordinary one: if the day subtraction goes negative, borrow the real length of the previous month; if the month subtraction goes negative, borrow 12 months from the year. Those steps are written out on how to calculate chronological age and summarized on methodology.

What ChronoCalc does not include

This is not Curriculum Associates software and not the BRIGANCE Online Management System. We do not ship screening items, illustrations, or cutoff scores. “Support” on this page means the age format, not a login to a publisher bank. District overlays and later editions can change how a program wants age recorded. When the manual in your hand disagrees with the widget, follow the manual.

Children born preterm may need a corrected age for early developmental comparison and a chronological age for the screen’s own instructions. Read the examiner’s manual for which one the screen wants. Corrected age, when you do need it, is computed on the corrected age calculator from gestational age at birth. Do not subtract a round “two months” unless that is the figure the chart supports.

The dates stay in the browser. For a printable borrowing reminder, use the cheat sheet. After you have the exact age, go back to the screen’s own age bands. ChronoCalc will not tell you which skill domain to open. That decision is in the examiner’s materials, indexed by the age you just computed. If the session was yesterday, do not recompute against today just because the report is dated today.
