Days Until New Year 2027: Countdown and How to Count It
Table of Contents ▼
There are 67 days until New Year 2027 if you count from Monday, October 26, 2026. January 1, 2027 falls on a Friday, so New Year’s Eve is Thursday, December 31, 2026. This guide shows the countdown from common dates, explains the counting rule that causes most “off by one” mistakes, and gives simple ways to turn the countdown into weeks, workdays or a family tradition.
To count from any other date, use our days between dates guide or the age in days calculator, which work the same way for any two dates.
Days until New Year from common dates
The table counts whole days from the start date to January 1, 2027, not counting the start date itself. This is the standard way a countdown works: on December 31, there is one day left.
| From this date | Day of week | Days until January 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| October 26, 2026 | Monday | 67 |
| November 1, 2026 | Sunday | 61 |
| November 26, 2026 (Thanksgiving) | Thursday | 36 |
| December 1, 2026 | Tuesday | 31 |
| December 25, 2026 (Christmas) | Friday | 7 |
| December 31, 2026 | Thursday | 1 |
A handy anchor: December 1 is always 31 days before January 1, because December has 31 days. If you remember that, you can count the rest of the year in your head by adding the remaining days of November and October.
How to count the days until New Year yourself
You only need the number of days left in each month. The method has three steps.
- Count the days left in the current month. Subtract today’s date from the number of days in the month. On October 26, that is 31 − 26 = 5 days (October 27 to 31).
- Add every full month in between. November has 30 days and December has 31, so add 61.
- Add one day for January 1 itself. The countdown ends when the new year arrives, so the final step lands on day 1 of January.
Example from October 26: 5 + 30 + 31 + 1 = 67 days.
The “+1” at the end is the step people forget. It exists because steps 1 and 2 only take you to the end of December 31. You need one more day to reach midnight and the first day of the new year.
Inclusive vs exclusive counting
The biggest source of confusion with any countdown is whether today counts. There are two common rules.
- Exclusive counting (the usual countdown). Do not count today. On December 31, there is 1 day until New Year. This is what most countdown clocks and calendar apps show.
- Inclusive counting. Count both today and the target day. On December 31, that would be 2 days. This is used for things like hotel stays or event schedules, where both the first and last day matter.
Neither rule is wrong. Just pick one and state it. If two people get answers that differ by exactly one day, the counting rule is almost always the reason. Our days between dates guide explains the same idea with more examples.
Weeks, hours and workdays until New Year
Days are the easiest unit, but other units can be more useful for planning.
Weeks
Divide the days by 7. From October 26, 67 days is 9 weeks and 4 days. From December 1, 31 days is 4 weeks and 3 days.
Hours and minutes
Multiply the days by 24 for hours and by 1,440 for minutes, then adjust for the current time of day. From midnight at the start of October 27, there are 66 × 24 = 1,584 hours until midnight on January 1. Remember that the US switches from daylight saving time to standard time on Sunday, November 1, 2026, which adds one hour to a countdown in most US time zones.
Workdays
Count only Monday to Friday, then subtract holidays your workplace observes. From Monday, October 26, 2026 to Thursday, December 31, 2026, there are 49 weekdays. Thanksgiving (November 26) and Christmas Day (December 25) fall on weekdays, so many people have 47 working days left in the year, before any extra time off.
When does the new year start around the world?
The new year arrives at local midnight, so it moves around the world over about 26 hours. The first inhabited places to see January 1 are islands in Kiribati (UTC+14). Major cities follow in order: Auckland, Sydney, Tokyo, then on through Asia, Europe and Africa.
In the United States, New York reaches midnight at UTC−5 in winter, Chicago an hour later, Denver an hour after that, and Los Angeles three hours after New York. Hawaii is among the last US states, at UTC−10. The very last places on Earth to reach the new year are the uninhabited Baker and Howland Islands at UTC−12.
If you are counting down with friends or family in another time zone, agree on whose midnight you mean. A video call that starts at 9 p.m. in Los Angeles is midnight in New York.
Is 2027 a leap year?
No. A year is a leap year if it divides evenly by 4, except century years, which must also divide by 400. 2027 does not divide by 4, so February 2027 has 28 days and the year has 365 days. The next leap year is 2028, and the most recent was 2024.
Leap years matter for long countdowns and for age calculations. Our guide to leap year age calculation explains how people born on February 29 count their birthdays.
Why does the year start on January 1?
January 1 has not always been New Year’s Day. The early Roman calendar began in March, which is why September, October, November and December carry the Latin words for seven, eight, nine and ten. When Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar in 46 BC, January 1 became the start of the civil year.
In medieval Europe, many places moved the start of the year to other dates, such as March 25. The Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, fixed the leap-year rule we still use, and countries adopted it at different times. Britain and its American colonies switched in 1752, and the same law made January 1 the official start of the legal year. That is why some colonial-era documents show two years for dates in January to March.
Other calendars still mark their own new years. The Lunar New Year falls in late January or February, and the Jewish, Islamic and Persian new years follow their own calendars. For everyday countdowns in the United States, though, January 1 is the date that matters.
Common mistakes when counting days
- Using the wrong month length. Remember the rhyme: thirty days have September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31, except February.
- Forgetting the final day. Add one day to reach January 1 itself, not just the end of December.
- Mixing counting rules. Decide whether today counts before you compare answers with someone else.
Countdown ideas for the last days of the year
A countdown is more fun when each day has a small task. Here are a few ideas that suit families, classrooms and offices.
- Paper chain. Make one link for each day left, and remove one every morning. Kids love seeing the chain shrink.
- Year-in-review jar. Each day, write one good memory from the year on a slip of paper. Read them together on New Year’s Eve.
- Twelve-day goal plan. Starting December 20, set one small goal per day, such as clearing your inbox or backing up your photos.
- Classroom countdown. Teachers can display the days left until winter break and New Year, and do a one-minute reflection each morning.
- Fitness countdown. Walk one more minute each day than the day before, and finish the year with a long walk on December 31.
Holidays between now and New Year

| Veterans Day | Wednesday, November 11 |

Our days until Christmas and days until Thanksgiving guides cover those countdowns in more detail.
Counting down to New Year 2027 on any device
You do not need a special app. Here are three quick options:
- Phone calendar. Create an all-day event on January 1, 2027. Many calendar apps show “in X days” when you open the event.
- Spreadsheet. In Google Sheets or Excel, type
=DATE(2027,1,1)-TODAY()into a cell. It returns the days left and updates every day. - Search engine. Typing “days until January 1 2027” into a search engine usually returns a quick answer, which you can check against the table above.
The spreadsheet formula is exclusive by default, so it matches the countdown in this guide. To count inclusively, add 1.
