How Many Days Until Thanksgiving 2026? Countdown + Method

How many days until Thanksgiving 2026: photo of a calendar and clock scene

How many days until Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, 26 November, so from Tuesday, 20 October 2026 there are 37 days to go, which is 5 weeks and 2 days. The table below gives the count from other useful dates, and the rest of this guide shows how to count the days yourself so you can check any countdown you see online.

The US holiday always falls on the fourth Thursday of November, so the date moves each year. That is why a fixed “days until” number goes out of date fast, and why it helps to know the method as well as the answer. For counting from your own date of birth instead of to a holiday, use the age in days calculator.

Days until Thanksgiving 2026 from key dates

Each count is the number of days from the start date to Thursday, 26 November 2026, not counting the start date itself.

FromDays until ThanksgivingWeeks and days
Tue 20 Oct 2026375 weeks, 2 days
Sat 31 Oct 2026 (Halloween)263 weeks, 5 days
Sun 1 Nov 2026253 weeks, 4 days
Wed 11 Nov 2026 (Veterans Day)152 weeks, 1 day
Sun 15 Nov 2026111 week, 4 days

To count from any other date, subtract that day’s number from 37 for each day after 20 October. For example, 25 October is 5 days later, so it is 32 days before Thanksgiving.

When is Thanksgiving in the next five years?

Because the holiday is the fourth Thursday of November, it can land anywhere from 22 to 28 November.

YearThanksgiving date
2026Thursday, 26 November
2027Thursday, 25 November
2028Thursday, 23 November
2029Thursday, 22 November
2030Thursday, 28 November

Two quick checks: the fourth Thursday can never be earlier than the 22nd, because the first Thursday is at the earliest the 1st, and three weeks later is the 22nd. It can never be later than the 28th, because the first Thursday is at the latest the 7th.

How to count the days until Thanksgiving by hand

You do not need a calculator for this, just a calendar and one rule: count whole days from the start date to the target date, without counting the start date.

  1. Finish the current month. October has 31 days. From 20 October, there are 31 − 20 = 11 days left in October.
  2. Add the days in November up to the holiday. Thanksgiving is the 26th, so add 26.
  3. Add the two. 11 + 26 = 37 days.

The same method works for any pair of dates. When the dates are in the same month, simply subtract: from 11 November to 26 November is 26 − 11 = 15 days.

Counting days: inclusive or exclusive?

Most countdowns, including the ones on this page, use exclusive counting. They do not count today, because today is already under way. If you want to count both the start date and Thanksgiving itself, add 1. From 20 October, that gives 38 calendar dates on which you could tick off a box.

Neither is wrong, but mixing them causes off-by-one errors. A family countdown chart with a box for every day, including Thanksgiving, needs the inclusive number. A “sleeps until” countdown for children uses the exclusive number, because the last sleep is the night before.

Weeks, weekdays and weekends until Thanksgiving

Days are not the only useful unit.

  • Weeks: 37 days ÷ 7 = 5 weeks and 2 days.
  • Weekdays: from Tuesday 20 October up to, but not including, Thursday 26 November, there are 27 weekdays (Monday to Friday). That is a useful number for school planning. Subtract any days your school is closed, such as Veterans Day on Wednesday 11 November if your district takes it off.
  • Weekends: there are five full Saturday-Sunday weekends between 20 October and Thanksgiving: 24-25 October, 31 October-1 November, 7-8 November, 14-15 November and 21-22 November.

Teachers can use the weekday count to plan a unit that ends on the Tuesday or Wednesday before the break. Parents can use the weekends to plan shopping trips or travel.

Planning backwards from Thanksgiving

A countdown is most useful when you work backwards from the date. A simple plan from 37 days out:

Days beforeWhat to do
35Decide who is hosting and how many people are coming
28Book travel if you are flying or driving far
21Plan the menu and any special diets
14Order a fresh turkey if you want one
7Buy non-perishables and check you have enough chairs
4Start thawing a large frozen turkey in the fridge
1Prep sides, set the table and chill drinks

If you are travelling rather than hosting, shift the plan: book flights at 35 days rather than 28, because the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are traditionally some of the busiest travel days in the US. Build in an extra day either side if you can.

The thawing step is the one people forget. Food safety guidance from the USDA is to allow about 24 hours in the refrigerator for every 4 to 5 pounds of frozen turkey, so a 16-pound bird needs about four days. Check the USDA’s turkey thawing guidance for full details.

Why Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday

The date rule has a short history. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, set for the last Thursday of November, and presidents kept that pattern for decades. In 1939 the date was moved a week earlier, which caused confusion because some states followed the change and others did not. In 1941 Congress settled it with a joint resolution that fixed the holiday as the fourth Thursday of November, which is the rule still used today.

The difference matters in years when November has five Thursdays. In 2029, for example, the fourth Thursday is 22 November and the last is the 29th. Under the old “last Thursday” rule, Thanksgiving would have been a week later.

Hours and minutes until Thanksgiving

If you want a bigger number for a countdown poster, convert the days:

  • 37 days is 888 hours (37 × 24).
  • 888 hours is 53,280 minutes (888 × 60).

Those figures count from midnight at the start of 21 October to midnight at the start of 26 November. A live countdown will show slightly different numbers depending on the time of day you check it, so round to whole days for anything printed.

Countdown ideas for families and classrooms

A visible countdown keeps the date in mind and turns the wait into a short daily routine.

  • Paper chain. Make one link for each day left. Children tear off a link each morning. From 20 October you need 37 links; from 1 November, 25.
  • Gratitude jar. Each day, everyone adds a slip of paper with one thing they are thankful for. Read them together at the Thanksgiving meal.
  • Classroom number of the day. Write the days left on the board each morning and ask students to show it as weeks and days, or as a subtraction from 37.
  • Weekend planner. Give each of the five weekends a job: costumes put away, guest list, menu, shopping and cleaning.
  • Calendar colouring. Print a November calendar and let children colour each day as it passes. It doubles as a lesson in reading dates.

For the classroom version, the weekday count is the useful one. It tells you how many lessons remain before the break, which helps when planning the end of a unit or a pre-holiday project.

Counting days until Christmas and New Year

The same method gives you the next big dates.

  • Christmas: from 20 October 2026 to 25 December 2026 is 66 days. From Thanksgiving to Christmas is 29 days.
  • New Year’s Day: from 20 October 2026 to 1 January 2027 is 73 days.

Check the Christmas number by hand: 11 days left in October, plus 30 in November, plus 25 in December, makes 66.

Common mistakes in day countdowns

  • Counting the start day. This adds one day. Decide on exclusive or inclusive counting before you start.
  • Assuming every month has 30 days. October has 31, November has 30. Use the knuckle trick or a calendar.
  • Using last year’s date. Thanksgiving moves. In 2025 it was 27 November; in 2026 it is the 26th.
  • Mixing time zones. For a holiday that starts at midnight local time, count in your own time zone.
